Metroid Prime 2 and 3 Reportedly Coming to Switch Without the Full Remastering Treatment

After literally years of rumors, Metroid Prime Remastered was finally shadow-dropped on Switch last week. Response to the remaster has been great (check out my opinion here), but its release has led some to wonder if the other Metroid Prime games could also be making a comeback. While Metroid Prime 2 and 3 aren’t as beloved as the original game, they’re still solid Samus adventures worth revisiting.

Well, the rumors about Metroid Prime Remastered panning out has garnered other past insider statements about the series renewed attention. Prolific leaker Jeff Grubb (the original source of many of the Metroid Prime Remastered rumors) stated last year that Metroid Prime 2 and 3 would be coming to Switch, but that they probably won’t be getting ambitious full-asset remasters like the first game.

“Metroid Prime 1 — my understanding is that’s getting the big remaster treatment, and Metroid Prime 2 and Metroid Prime 3 are… they’ll probably get updated controls and things like that, but they’re not getting quite the same overhaul that Metroid Prime 1 is getting.”

In light of the release of Metroid Prime Remastered, a fan asked Grubb if he still stands by this reporting, and it seems like he does.

Correct. https://t.co/ojMzuRohp5

Of course, take this with a grain of salt for now. That said, this all makes sense. It would be strange to only release one game in the Metroid Prime Trilogy on Switch, but Retro Studios put a lot of time and effort into Metroid Prime Remastered – it just wouldn’t be feasible to do the same with all the games, particularly with Metroid Prime 4 being their main focus now. It remains to be seen how MP 2 and 3 will be packaged, but it’s likely they’ll be launched digitally without a lot of pre-release fanfare.

Metroid Prime Remastered is available digitally all on the Switch. A physical version of the game will hit store shelves on February 22.
