Samsung’s latest and greatest foldable Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Galaxy Z Flip 5 are going to be official later this year. If everything goes accordingly, the new phones will be the most durable Samsung foldable in the market thanks to what we know as the “waterdrop” hinge that should help with the overall structural integrity and lack of gap when folded, especially with the foldable phone. Now, a new report suggests that Samsung will begin testing the hinge on the new foldable that is going to last over a month. During the entirety of the month, the phone will be folded and unfolded around 40,000 times over the span of 5 days a week and this will go on over a whole month.
Now, one would assume that such a cruel test for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is not going to yield the results but it goes to show just how confident Samsung is in terms of its new hinge.
Samsung will fold and unfold the Galaxy Z Fold 5 hinge 40,000 times a day over the course of one month
The report is coming from a reliable Korean outlet, and based on that, Samsung will start testing the hinge of the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 5 by the end of next week. We have previously heard that the new “waterdrop” hinge will allow the display of the phone to fold completely flat meaning there will be no gap between the two portions of the phone. Of course, this would mean that the hinge is more advanced and, therefore, more expensive to manufacture but considering how Samsung is pushing big on the upcoming foldable, we are certain that the benefits will outmeasure the cost with ease.
Another benefit of this new waterdrop hinge is that the Galaxy Z Fold 5 will be thinner at somewhere between 13 to 14mm and more importantly, the phone will also have a less visible crease. I do enjoy the idea of having a thinner phone but I cannot say I am confident about the crease going away because getting rid of it is not as easy.
More on the test, Samsung will fold the Galaxy Z Fold 5 200,000 times, and the company hopes the hinge will still be at 85% strength. The 200,000 folds are going to be done within 5 days, and Samsung will be doing multiple tests throughout the entirety of the month to see how well the phone holds up.
For those wondering, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Galaxy Z Flip 5 will debut sometime in August or September later this year. Both phones will be featuring Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy, along with all the bells and whistles we can expect from Samsung. Judging by Samsung’s decision to already test the hinge, we can hope that the phones are more durable than ever, allowing us to truly have a wonderful foldable experience. Sadly, this year’s release will also not see the foldable having an S Pen considering how the engineers have run into design limitations but you would still be able to use the regular S Pen. We are hoping we one day get to see a foldable that comes with a built-in S Pen but until that happens, we’ll have to wait.
