Sophie Turner learned her marriage to singer Joe Jonas was over at the same time the world did, court documents reveal.
The Game of Thrones actress is suing her estranged husband for the return of their two young children, with papers filed in New York alleging the Jonas Brothers singer has refused to hand over their passports.
The fresh documents were filed by Turner on Thursday (US time), and provide details about the lead-up to the couple’s split.
Earlier this month, the rumour mill was in full swing, with reports alleging that Jonas had sought an end to his marriage to the British-born actor. Soon after he and Turner confirmed they were parting ways “amicably”.
According to the latest documents, their marriage breakdown happened “very suddenly”. Turner and Jonas argued on August 15 and “on or about September 1”, he filed for divorce.
Turner learned of that move only “through the media” four days later, the documents state.
Sophie Turner has filed court documents in New York amid her divorce.
Turner and Jonas relocate to England
The petition, filed under child abduction clauses of the Hague Convention, reveals how Turner and Jonas planned to move their family to England.
The couple have two daughters – Willa, born in 2020, and another born in 2022, whose name has never been released. She is referred to as DMJ in the documents.
The documents claim that Jonas’s “wrongful retention” of the girls began on September 20.
The couple are said to have moved “frequently”, due to their entertainment carers. The court papers allege they decided in April 2023 to move to England.
Turner’s family still lives in Britain. The documents say she and Jonas spent a lot of time there and their daughters are dual British-US citizens.
Turner and Jonas had bought a home in Miami. But her documents say it was never intended as a home – instead, they wanted to live in Britain, considering it a “safe” location to raise their children.
According to the documents, the couple hunted for a “forever home” in Britain in December 2022 and had decided it was a good time to make the move, given the age of their eldest daughter.
They apparently moved to Britain in April, and bought a home together on July 7, 2023. According to the paperwork, the family “looked forward” to settling in Britain about Christmas-time.
The documents say Turner is involved in the children’s medical and dental care and other activities in England.
In May, she took on her “first significant [acting] role” in Britain since having children. Jonas had a planned tour, so the girls were left in his care, as he had more free time during the day.
Turner sues for the return of her children
The court documents say the young girls were meant to return to Britain on September 20 – a plan “reiterated” by Turner when the couple met on September 17 to discuss their split.
“The father has possession of the children’s passports,” the filing says.
“He refuses to return the passports to the mother and refuses to send the children home to England with the mother.”
On Tuesday this week, Turner alleges that Jonas’ lawyer told hers that the passports would not be returned.
Following the court filing, Jonas issued a statement through his management. It claims Turner knew he intended to file for divorce, says her allegations are “misleading at best, and a serious abuse of the legal system at worst”.
“The Florida court has already entered an order that restricts both parents from relocating the children. Sophie was served with this order on September 6, 2023, more than two weeks ago,” the statement said.
“Joe and Sophie had a cordial meeting this past Sunday in New York, when Sophie came to New York to be with the kids. They have been with her since that meeting. Joe’s impression of the meeting was that they had reached an understanding that they would work together towards an amicable co-parenting setup.”
The statement says that, despite that, Turner told Jonas she wanted to move their daughters to Britain and “demanded” their passports.
“If he complies, Joe will be in violation of the Florida court order,” it says.
