A man was arrested in Wasco, California by the Kern County Sheriff’s Office for tampering with evidence at the scene.
The man, identified as Resendo Tellez, age 27, was taken into custody near the local Amtrak station under charges that have unsettled the community.
The Kern County Sheriff’s Office reported that Tellez faced misdemeanor charges “of removing human body parts from an area that is not a cemetery without law enforcement approval,” 23abc reported.
The tragic underlying incident occurred on Friday morning when a pedestrian was struck and killed by a train. Burlington Northern Santa Fe, the railroad operator, confirmed the grim event in an email statement, noting that it happened directly in front of the Amtrak platform. The company has indicated that a full investigation is actively underway.
Authorities stated that deputies responded to the scene shortly after 8 am to the disturbing report and proceeded to arrest Tellez in the vicinity of the train station.
Eyewitness captured harrowing video footage that quickly circulated on Facebook, depicting Tellez examining the severed leg in a bizarre and unsettling manner.
In the video, Tellez sniffed the severed foot and then appeared to eat it, all while standing on a public sidewalk.
Online commentators have expressed their horror, with one user, Maria Teresa, incredulously posting, “Not him walking around eating a human foot!!!!”
Tellez did not seem fazed by either law enforcement’s arrival or the shocked onlookers documenting the grotesque act. He even nonchalantly waved at the cameras upon noticing he was being filmed, the New York Post reported.
The Sheriff’s Office has not provided additional details at this time regarding Tellez’s motives or mental state. The community is left reeling from the bizarre and gruesome aftermath of an already tragic accident as they await further information.
