Viewers peaked at 901,000 national viewers (averaging 809,000) tuning into see the Neighbours stalwart revealed as the first celebrity on the singing competition. While MKR – with Lawson joining Manu Feildel at the table of Victorian dad and daughter team Peter and Alice’s home restaurant – drew 767,000 viewers nationally. It was The Block that took out the night drawing a whopping 1.3 million viewers across the nation for its debut episode in this tree change season.Audiences were a little stunned by Moloney’s previously unknown singing ability. The panel was completely stumped after watching him belt out Ed Sheeran’s Bad Habits under the cover of the clever knight costume, cleverly holding the mic to his “severed” head he held in his hands. Mel B suggested Brendan Fevola, Chrissie Swan settled on former Bachelor Nick Cummins, Abbie Chatfield suggested Shannon Noll, and Hughesy went with the Knight Rider himself David Hasselhoff. “28 years on Neighbours, I tell you this is the shortest job I have ever had,” Moloney joked after his unmasking.Social media went off when the veteran actor was revealed with Moloney’s former co-star Bonnie Anderson – who won the second season of Ten’s reality show as The Bushranger – posted “yess Ryzzer!!!! You had me fooled! So wonderful to see you behind the mask. Epic work!”Others were full of praise for his voice.“I would never have guessed Ryan in a million years, He has a good voice too.” and“His voice as really nice wish he had stayed longer.” Viewers were similarly impressed with MKR’s return to its original recipe of focusing on the food. “Great first episode. Nice to see a more compassionate way of delivering the critiques from the judges, after all these cooks are home cooks. Apart from a few guests that were a bit snooty, they all seem really nice so far,” one posted. Series 8 contestant, Melbourne midwife Karen Gawne also delivered a heap of praise: “Nailed it, back to basics. Back to the formula Australia fell in love with. Thank you to the team at 7 for bringing it back to dinner parties and home cooking. A show I was proud to once be part of.” Peter and Alice presented a beautiful menu inspired by family favourites, but were let down by their take on their Grandma’s beloved lemon delicious pudding. The pair chose to proudly cook and serve it in their delicate tea cups to match their them. The table was wowed with the presentation, but upon closer inspection, it became clear the team’s dessert was undercooked and more of a soup than a pudding.“This is heartbreaking. This wasn’t cooked the way your grandma made it, was it?” asked Lawson.“This is a pudding I have made every week for 30 years. I’ve made it once for 12 people, and it’s a disaster.” said Peter. Nigella did her best to encourage Peter and Alice. “You are both lovely people and cooks. It was the perfect choice to balance out your menu. These things happen to us sometimes, and it happened on the wrong night. I’m sorry.”
