It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster for Cyberpunk 2077 fans over the past few days. Earlier this week CD Projekt Red announced Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, the game’s first expansion, but we later learned this would be the game’s only expansion. That said, according to CDPR, they remain committed to the Cyberpunk 2077 franchise, even if multiple big expansions aren’t in the cards.
During their latest earnings call (thanks to Video Games Chronicle for the transcription) CD Projekt Red’s Michal Nowakowski spoke further on the future of Cyberpunk 2077 and its expansion. It seems one of the big goals of Phantom Liberty is to push the abilities of next-gen consoles without having to worry about last-gen restrictions (the expansion won’t be playable on Xbox One/PS4). Nowakowski also promises CDPR is going to remain committed to CP2077, with new “content” and “experiences” in addition to the upcoming expansion.
“On the question of further expansions for Cyberpunk, we decided to develop one major expansion for Cyberpunk which is going to take advantage of all the capabilities of the new-gen consoles. Having said that, we’re fully committed to developing the Cyberpunk IP further, so beyond this particular Cyberpunk expansion. We’ve put a lot of effort and time into building this franchise and we definitely want to continue to build upon what was built right now with new stories, new experiences, new content, not just in a video game format, but I’ll leave it here. So, in terms of expansions, there’s going to be just one major expansion, however there’s going be new stuff in the future.”
It will be interesting to see what this additional Cyberpunk 2077 content might be. While the game world likely won’t expand beyond what we get in Phantom Liberty, perhaps new game modes are introduced? Spinoffs ala The Witcher 3 and Gwent? Of course, non-video-game stuff is also promised. Could Netflix come calling following the success of The Witcher series? We shall see.
Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty launches on PC, Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and Stadia in 2023.
