Welcome to Sweater Season—5 Trends That Are Out and 5 That Are In

It just doesn’t feel right to think about sweaters when it’s still 90ºF in the shade and everyone on your Instagram feed seems to be on the Amalfi Coast. Trust me—I get it. But as of yesterday, it’s officially fall, and chances are you’ll soon find yourself reaching for a sweater. I, for one, am ready for that after five months of heat and humidity. (I live in the South…)

Sweaters are one of those items that you’ll probably want to invest in classic versions of before trends, but sometimes the classics become trends and vice versa. So let’s talk about fall’s sweater trends, shall we? There are five styles that are quickly emerging as the top trends of the season, and there are also five that I’d advise stowing away for now. (Chances are they’ll be back.)

Scroll on to shop fall’s most important sweater trends and find out which are taking a back seat this season.

I’m saying farewell to puffy sleeves and frilly details and instead investing in classic fisherman sweaters that give that cozy coastal-grandmother look.

I find that one-shoulder sweaters defeat the purpose of wearing a sweater (which is for warmth). But collared sweaters, with their preppy and polished look, are sticking around for another season (at least).

Another coastal-grandmother-inspired trend, oversize striped sweaters are going to be everywhere again this season. This is a trend that you’ll probably still be wearing a decade from now—I know I will.

Hairy knits that are akin to those angora sweaters we all wore in the early 2000s are shaping up to be one of the freshest trends of the season. This editor just ordered the Totême one.

While this trend may not keep you all that warm, you’ll certainly look cool wearing it. Dion Lee is the best representation of this trend.

Next up, a bunch of really good sweaters for under $100.
