Make iPad Volume Buttons Dynamic and Change with Orientation

Want your iPad volume buttons to be dynamic and change positions whenever you are in portrait or landscape position? Here’s how to do it.

Make the iPad Volume Buttons Feel Natural and Change with Orientation in iPadOS

With the iPad mini, Apple took an interesting decision to move the volume buttons above the tablet. And the way those buttons work is extremely genius too – the volume button facing towards the right or upwards will function as volume up. In other words, if you are holding the iPad mini in portrait mode, then the button facing towards the right will increase the volume and if you rotate the tablet 90-degree clockwise then the ‘volume down’ button will increase the volume, essentially turning into the ‘volume up’ button. It feels more natural to use and something which Apple should bring to other iPad models.

Except that it already has with a recent iPadOS update.

If you have a regular iPad, an iPad Air or the iPad Pro, you can set the volume buttons to be completely dynamic. If you change the orientation of the device, the volume buttons will change with them to be in a more natural position. I will show you how to set it up right now.

Note: Please make sure you are on the latest version of iPadOS in order to do this. iPadOS 16.1 or above at least. You can update to the latest version by going to Settings > General > Software Update.

Step 1. Launch the Settings app.

Step 2. Tap on Sounds on the left.

Step 3. Scroll all the way down in the list of options.

Step 4. Right at the very end you’ll see an option called Fixed Position Volume Controls – tap to disable it. Voila!

That’s all you have to do. From now on, your iPad’s volume button will be dynamic and change position according to the orientation in which you are holding the device.

If you’ve never used the iPad mini before, this change might seem super weird for you. it’s the same as when Apple introduced inverted scrolling on the mouse. It takes some time getting used to, but once you get the hang of it, you will never ever go back.
