I went shopping with my mom during Black Friday over the holiday weekend. While we’re both heavy online shoppers, we thought we’d venture out to browse and get in on the action. While we certainly have different styles, we often gravitate towards similar pieces and trends. Yes, despite our 29-year age difference (she’s 63 and I’m 34). But given that age really is just a number and has nothing to do with what you should or shouldn’t wear, it’s really no surprise that we like similar pieces.
On our shopping excursion, I noticed that there were actually five specific trends we both agreed on over others. And yes, the trends in question also happen to be looks that will hold strong in 2023. Naturally, I thought I’d share the list with you below in case you’re looking for a bit of styling and shopping inspiration.
Keep scrolling for visual references for each of the trends, complete with shopping recommendations from some of our favorite stores.
Ballet flats are trending right now, and the look will continue to be popular in 2023. I’ve been suggesting this darling shoe style over the last few months, and my mom is excited to add a new pair to her wardrobe.
We both have been into wide-leg trousers (and baggy jeans for me especially), but skinny pants dominated the runways, and we’re both interested in the style again. That said, the relaxed silhouettes will still be equal front-runners.
I have a few go-to moto jackets and my mom has one she loves as well. Forward leathers in oversize cuts or in distressed materials are quite appealing.
Structured bags and totes were all over the spring 2023 runways—sort of like “back to work bags,” if you will. My mom and I both adore the sophisticated nature of this bag trend.
I think a maxi skirt is quite chic—a big trend this season and one that will continue on next year. While my mom tends to gravitate towards midi skirts, she’s interested in some of the fresh styles out there.
