At 10:22pm last night, “officers from the Monterey Park Police Department responded to a local business in the 100 block of West Garvey Avenue in Monterrey Park regarding a shots fired call,” according to Capt. Andrew Meyer of the Sheriff’s homicide team. At least 10 people have been reported as killed with another 10 injured. The suspect fled the scene and is still at large.
At this time, there is no description of the shooter nor the type of weapon that they used.
There was a festival for the Chinese Lunar New Year going on in the area. The event has been cancelled from further celebration on Sunday. Police do not know whether the shooting was motivated by the events. According to the Monterey Park government website, “past Lunar New Year events in Monterey Park have drawn crowds estimated at over 100,000 visitors per day from all over Southern California.”
