Dragon Age: Dreadwolf Getting Help from the Mass Effect Team, Mark Darrah Back as Advisor

Last we heard, the long-in-development Dragon Age: Dreadwolf was playable from beginning to end and entering the final phases of its development, but what’s happened since then? The game officially entered alpha back in September, so could we be nearing an actual release date? That isn’t clear at the moment, but BioWare has provided a bit of an update on where Dreadwolf is at.

According to a new article from GamesBeat, Dragon Age: Dreadwolf remains in “post-production,” but the majority of the Mass Effect team has been assigned to help further “iterate and polish” the game as it gets closer to the finish line. This can be done as the new Mass Effect is still in the pre-production planning phase, so only a small team needs to be devoted to it full-time.

BioWare has also announced that longtime Dragon Age director and producer Mark Darrah is returning as a consultant for Dreadwolf. Darrah announced that he was retiring from BioWare back in 2020, without providing any hint about what might be next, but according to GamesBeat, he asked to return to the Canadian studio. Darrah will be “ensuring that the team is connecting this new [Dragon Age] experience with the legacy of the franchise,” but he won’t be displacing any of the leadership making the game.

BioWare general manager Gary McKay had the following to say about the various Dragon Age development moves…

“Our studio is focused on creating the best Dragon Age: Dreadwolf while the core Mass Effect team continues their pre-production work. We continue to iterate and polish Dreadwolf, focusing on the things that matter most to our fans. As we further connect this new experience with the series’ legacy Mark Darrah will join the team as a consultant, bringing with him years of experience working on Dragon Age. We’re proud to have this team, with strong leadership at the helm, working together to realize the vision we have for the game.”

Hopefully, BioWare bringing on Darrah and the Mass Effect team is a sign they’re surging toward a release for Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, but part of me fears the help is needed because the game isn’t shaping up like it should. We shall see.

Dragon Age: Dreadwolf is coming to PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5. A release window has yet to be announced.
