Legend has it, if you remember wearing something the first time ’round, you shouldn’t wear it again. But it’s 2023, and “rules” are there to be broken, especially when it comes to fashion. Everything Y2K is making a comeback, and as a 10-year-old at the time, I’ve worn a lot of these trends already—including floaty bohemian maxi skirts, pedal pushers (remember those?) and, of course, the floor-length denim skirt. Practically everyone owned one at the time, but these were left in the early ’00s, where I thought they belonged… until now, that is.
I bought a maxi skirt from Zara with a matching top at the start of spring, and quite frankly, I’m obsessed. The knit version soon sold out, and it only took me a week or so to spot a few people in the street also wearing it. Skip forward to summer, and I can’t stop seeing the throwback skirt loved by the likes of Jennifer Lopez and Christina Aguilera now worn by everyone from Bella Hadid to Zoë Kravitz. And that’s just the celebs. My whole Instagram feed is packed full of ways to wear them. So I’m calling it: The maxi skirt is officially back for 2023. Need further proof? Here are some ways to style them (sans disc belt) this summer, along with 21 styles to shop now.
Style Notes: Here, I am wearing the Zara skirt that changed my mind about the maxi. And I’ve worn it on repeat with everything from the matching top to a white vest and over a swimsuit on holiday.
Style Notes: Monikh is one of the long-standing fans of the maxi skirt. Filling her wardrobe with so many iterations, she shows how the full skirt is best worn with platform heels and a billowing blouse.
Column silhouettes are proving especially popular this season, with Sasha showcasing a great way to transition yours into the colder months—with a jumper in a corresponding hue.
Style Notes: Another girl after my own heart, Lois is also a big fan of the maxi skirt co-ord. Keeping it chic, the fashion influencer proves top-to-toe black is a summer vibe.
Style Notes: Crochet is quite literally everywhere this season—from tops and swimwear to skirts—and this is how to wear it. Throw it on over a bikini, just like Emma did, and watch as it becomes your fail-safe holiday look.
Next up, the summer dress trends I’m beyond excited to wear this year.
