More than two years after the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, a bipartisan group of House members has a message for allies: We’re still fighting to get you the resources and support you need.
“We aren’t going to let this go,” Rep. Michael Waltz (R-Fla.) said at an event held by the For Country Caucus of military veterans. “We aren’t going to forget. And to our Afghan allies who may be still out there: We’re with you and we’re going to do everything we can to fight.”
They’re looking to pass the the bipartisan Afghan Adjustment Act, which would provide a path to permanent U.S. status for allies evacuated from the country as the U.S. left in 2021.
“This bill — this long overdue effort — is about having the backs of the people who had ours when we were overseas,” said Rep. Jeff Jackson (D-N.C.). “It’s not complicated. It’s not partisan. It should have been done a long time ago.”
