The lead singer of this year’s Australian Eurovision Song Contest entrant Danny Estrin has revealed his band Voyager has postponed a European tour after his shock cancer diagnosis.
“Last week I was dealt some life-altering news: I’ve been diagnosed with cancer that requires immediate treatment,” Estrin wrote in a post on the band’s Instagram account on Thursday night.
He did not reveal what type of cancer he had, but said it meant the end of plans to head to Britain within weeks.
“I am absolutely devastated that we cannot perform on our forthcoming European tour, especially after this incredible Eurovision year we’ve had,” Estrin wrote.
“I am on strict doctor’s orders to not take this lightly, put my health first and get this sorted so we can be on stage again as soon as possible.
“This has been an extremely hard decision to make, but one that everyone will hopefully understand.”
Five-piece Perth rockers Voyager came ninth in Liverpool in May with their hit Promise – and an elaborate stage set that notably featured a Toyota.
They had been due to perform five British dates in October.
Estrin, who also plays keyboard for Voyager, said the tour will be rescheduled to October 2024. Fans can get refunds if they want.
He said he would perform a last show at the America’s Cup Event in Fremantle on Sunday before his treatment.
“In the coming weeks I will focus on my health and family and ask that everyone please respect our privacy. I truly value and appreciate everyone’s support and understanding during this time,” Estrin wrote.
“I’m surrounded by my incredible bandmates and team who are navigating all things Voyager whilst I am out of action.
“Love, your fierce friend Danny!”
Voyager also comprises bass guitarist Alex Canion, drummer Ashley Doodkorte and guitarists Simone Dow and Scott Kay.
The band originally got together as a group of University of Western Australia first-year students with a passion for metal. Since then nine members have come and gone.
Earlier this year, it was revealed they might be Australia’s last Eurovision entry.
Australia was invited to be a regular competitor after Jessica Mauboy, was a smash hit at the 2014 Eurovision in 2014. Australia has had proper entries every year since 2015, but that deal expired this year.
