I’m Done Buying Super-Trendy Stuff—Here’s My Longevity Shopping List

OSTN Staff

In my younger years, I was constantly chasing trends. Whether it was an It silhouette, statement accessory, or buzzy new shoe style, I was quickly enamored. And thanks to the ever-changing trend cycle, I was just as quickly bored and on to the next thing. This flighty behavior is not only exhausting but extremely wasteful—both in terms of money and discarded pieces. While I do my best to donate clothing and shoes I no longer wear and shop sustainable brands, the negative impact the fashion industry as a whole has on the environment is not lost on me.

In an effort to reduce my personal contribution to that negative impact, I’ve examined my shopping habits and introduced a few actionable items that feel like sustainable solutions. I’m making an effort to shop mostly secondhand (The RealReal has become my best friend), getting shoes resoled instead of swapping for a new pair, and have made it a point to stop buying into every trend that pops up. Instead, I’m investing in timeless pieces that I’ll wear for years. From classic coats to vintage jeans, here is my timeless wardrobe checklist for cultivating a closet that has longevity.

On Yusra Siddiqui: ASOS trench coat; Derek Lam top; Adidas sneakers. It doesn’t get more timeless than a trench coat. This chic silhouette never goes out of style and guarantees your outfit will look polished. Investing in a quality trench is one of the safest bets you can make.

There’s something about a crisp button-down that just exudes confidence. Paired with jeans, skirts, or even sweats (hello, WFH!), this classic shirt looks polished, cool, and professional.

On Sabina Socol: Miu Miu bag; Slvrlake denim; BY FAR boots. I’m sure I don’t have to convince you of the value of a great pair of jeans, so this one is a no brainer. Find a pair you love that fits you just right and you’ll be set for years.

On Natasha Ndlovu: ACNE Studios bag; Alexander McQueen boots. If there’s one pair of shoes I come back to every fall and winter, it’s black ankle boots. They go with absolutely everything and never go out of style. So whether you prefer a combat, Chelsea, or heeled style, black ankle boots are a smart investment.

On Chinda Phraph: Everlane T-shirt; Cinco bracelet . Blazers are one of those pieces that can be dressed up or down with ease and worn to just about everything. Work, date night, dinner with friends—any event on your calendar will welcome a chic blazer look.

On Mecca James-Williams: ACNE Studios blazer; Edas bag. Handbag trends are fickle and there’s always a new It silhouette or brand making noise, but a few classic styles will always remain. A structured bag looks chic, effortless, and timeless regardless of what the current It bag might be.

On Ellie: Missoma necklaces. I’ve always had a penchant for gold jewelry, so I’ve noticed that year after year, it never goes away. Adding a dainty gold necklace or chic gold earring instantly elevates an outfit, and pairs well with every color. It’s one of those investments you’ll truly never regret.

Up next, these photogenic trends are officially taking over, and I’ve got the proof.
