The 57 year-old Bateau Bay resident was caught when an off-duty police officer spotted her car, allegedly en route to South Australia. Police allege they had denied her entry to Victoria previously and instructed her to return to NSW and apply for a permit to enter. She allegedly returned to the border at 4am on Wednesday, driving through the Chandlers Creek checkpoint “at a fast rate of speed”. Police initially pursued the grey Volkswagen Passat station wagon but called off the chase due to community safety concerns. She evaded authorities for 14 hours before an off-duty police officer spotted her car near Nhill on Wednesday at 5pm. She was arrested an hour later when police used a tyre deflation device to stop her car on the Western Highway. She will be taken to Hotel Quarantine and police expect to charge her with offences including conduct endangering life, failing to stop on police direction and contravening chief health officer directions. She is a resident in the New South Wales Central Coast area, which has been declared a ‘Red Zone’ by Victorian health authorities. DHHS has been contacted for comment.
