A military plane previously used by President Trump is reportedly scheduled to land in Scotland the day before Joe Biden’s inauguration, fuelling speculation that the president plans to leave the country for his luxury Scottish golf resort, rather than attend the event.
According to a report in the Sunday Post, a weekly Scottish newspaper, the aircraft is scheduled to land at Prestwick Airport – near the president’s Turnberry golf resort – on January 19, one day before Joe Biden is due to be inaugurated in Washington.
The plane, a Boeing 757, has been used by the president on previous trips abroad, according to the report, although it is more frequently used by the Vice-President or First Lady Melania Trump.
White House spokesman Judd Deere told the Sunday Post that the president had not finalized his plans for January 20.
Trump has visited his Turnberry resort previously in his presidency as part of a wider European trip in 2018.
The Sunday Post cited sources at Prestwick Airport who said that a US surveillance aircraft which landed at Prestwick was flown above Turnberry in recent weeks, adding to speculation that routine intelligence work may have been carried out in advance of a presidential visit.
Multiple reports have suggested that Trump, who has refused to acknowledge Biden’s election victory and claims without evidence the election was rigged against him, is planning to skip President-elect Biden’s inauguration.
He could instead reportedly attempt to host a rival, attention-grabbing event at the same time, which would raise complications around issues including the transfer of the so-called “nuclear football,” a suitcase which gives the president the means to conduct a nuclear strike.
Axios in December reported that Trump was considering a plan to fly in Air Force One to Florida, then address supporters at a rally held at the same time as Biden’s inauguration.
