Their Story
Brett Ostrander was arrested by the FBI in August 2023, months after the events of January 6th. His arrest came under shocking circumstances: Brett had gone to the police station in Iredell County to assist with another case involving an assault on a friend.
Instead of being thanked for his cooperation, he was taken into custody by the FBI. At the time of his arrest, Nicole was five months pregnant with their third daughter.
That same evening, their home was raided by federal agents. Phones were confiscated, leaving Nicole scrambling to purchase a replacement just to maintain contact with family and friends.
The trauma of the raid and arrest left the family shaken, and their nightmare was only beginning.

The Legal Ordeal
Facing six federal charges related to January 6th, Brett and Nicole had to make impossible decisions to mount a legal defense.
Hiring an attorney required selling their home, plunging the family into financial ruin.
They moved into a travel trailer with their three daughters, sacrificing stability and comfort to fight for Brett’s freedom.
In September 2024, after a rushed trial in a hostile court environment, a jury returned a guilty verdict on all six counts after only two hours of deliberation.
Brett was advised not to testify, as doing so could have added an obstruction charge if he were found guilty—a clear indication of the deck being stacked against him.
In December 2024, Brett was sentenced to 38 months in prison, followed by three years of probation, in addition to thousands of dollars in fines and court costs.

A Family Struggling to Survive
The financial toll has been devastating. Despite their best efforts, the Ostranders are struggling to keep their heads above water.
Nicole, a stay-at-home mom who homeschools their children, has been unable to find steady work due to internet issues and a prior knee injury.
Adding insult to injury, their bank account was recently closed without explanation, leaving them with no access to their remaining funds during the Christmas season.
The family celebrated Christmas and two of their daughters’ birthdays with little more than faith and hope.
Their resilience is inspiring, but they need help to make it through the coming months as Brett prepares to potentially serve his sentence.
