Huggett was one of the country’s most popular stars in the early ‘90s thanks to his roles as Sonny on E Street and Glen Donnelly on Neighbours. He left Neighbours in November 1991 and now, 30 years later is back, as Donnelly and his half-sister Lucy, played by Melissa Bell, make a surprise return to Ramsay Street. The pair’s original storyline, where they had an ‘inappropriate relationship’, caused such scandal at the time that the offending episode was edited for broadcast in the UK.Huggett, who went on to appear in Home And Away, Blue Heelers and All Saints and won a Best New Talent Logie, stepped away from the soap spotlight in 1991 because he was not comfortable with fame.“Even back then I never played up to the heart-throb thing. I was always surprised when people recognised me and found it daunting when groups of people would come up and go ‘you’re from Neighbours or you’re Sonny’, it was always a bit of a shock and it was probably one of the reasons I stepped back from it,” he said.“Especially going to England, it was insane over there. I just wasn’t comfortable with being that famous. It was good to have that privacy again and have a normal life in a way.”His step back saw him become a shearer in New South Wales.“After Neighbours, I travelled and stayed in England for three years doing mainly theatre, “I went to the shearers Hall of Fame out at Hay and I went ‘I am going to do that’. “So I learned how to shear and went off and did that for a couple of years.”Huggett said he was excited about the twists and turns ahead for his character’s return to Neighbours.“It felt like coming home,” he said.
