Clubs across the state received news of the cancellation from their local leagues late on Friday, with many understanding the move was necessary to keep their communities safe. Geelong Amateur Football and Netball Club posted to Facebook on Friday night and said it was “shocking news” the kids were going to wake up to on Saturday morning. “Not to mention the senior teams that have worked (their) backsides off,” the post read. South Warrnambool Football Netball Club said the scrubbing was “incredibly disappointing”, especially with its under 18s women’s team slated to play in a Grand Final on Sunday. Despite the cancellation, the club still shared a six-minute video featuring the players with the caption “girls, your time will come”. Meanwhile, Leongatha Junior Football Club said it was “absolutely shattered”.“I understand this news will be extremely difficult for some kids so please ensure they have the support they need during this difficult news,” it said in a Facebook post. Mooroopna Football Netball Club – nearby to the emerging Shepparton Covid cluster – lamented that they “nearly got over the line with this” but said “changed conditions have shortened the season”. However, Sale City Junior Football Netball Club was lucky enough to see its two under 13s/14s netball teams play off in a semi-final derby, hours before news of the cancellation reached the club. “It was a fantastic game, neck and neck at many points in the game,” a Facebook post read.
