Witnesses on Sunday reported hearing a “powerful explosion” in Kabul, the capital city of Afghanistan.
Later, US officials said they carried out an airstrike against an ISIS-K bomber connected to Thursday’s attack at a Kabul airport.
The two events are believed to be separate incidents, but details on both incidents are still coming in. The Taliban, according to the Associated Press, said the incidents were not linked.
A Taliban spokesperson told the AP that the US airstrike was targeting a suicide bomber in a vehicle. The bomber had aimed to attack the Kabul international airport amid the country’s desperate efforts to evacuate Americans from Taliban-run Afghanistan, US officials said.

The AP confirmed that a child had been killed in the blast.
Sources in Afghanistan told Insider that the sound of the blast was the result of a rocket hitting a house near Kabul airport.
Reuters reported that two witnesses confirmed that the blast was caused by a rocket, but official confirmation is pending.
It is yet unclear who fired the rocket.

The explosion comes days after an ISIS-K suicide bomber killed at least 169 people at Kabul airport.
Officials at the US Embassy in Kabul warned citizens on Saturday to leave the airport due to a “specific, credible threat.”
“US citizens should avoid traveling to the airport and avoid all airport gates at this time,” the alert said.
