The Weekend Sunrise host was dispatched to London with a Seven crew on or about November 4 to record an exclusive interview with the “Hello” singer – part of a package Seven brokered with CBS and Sony Pictures which also incorporates the broadcast rights to Sunday night’s much-hyped Oprah Winfrey One Night Only special and two-hour concert.Network sources confirmed Doran was spoken to and suspended from work for two weeks after he offended the singer when he admitted – during the interview – he hadn’t listened to the diva’s new album, 30, prior to their sit-down.The interview was set up as a promo for the much-anticipated album.Sources said Doran had been allocated a 20-30 minute interview slot with Adele and the one-time crime reporter had completed his interview when he raised the singer’s ire by failing to ask a single question about the new album.When Adele asked the Weekend Sunrise host “What do you think of my album?” Doran was forced to admit “I haven’t listened to it.”While Seven insiders told The Sunday Telegraph the singer, offended, walked from the interview, music industry insiders contradicted this, saying the interview had already been conducted when the singer probed Doran on his research.Although a Seven crew shot the interview, Sony — which negotiated a $A167 million multi-album deal with Adele in 2016 — had veto rights to the footage and refused to release the material, television sources said.As a result Seven, which had slated the interview to air last Sunday night as part of its Spotlight program — the date the Winfrey interview screened in the US — was forced to pull together a package featuring Australian artists singing the artist’s songs.Television sources claim Seven spent close to a million dollars buying the One Night Only package and associated interview.“Seven is obviously angry about it. Matt was reprimanded. He had the links — he should have done the research,” said one Seven insider on Saturday. “Seven should have had at least three lots of content from the deal — the Oprah special, the Spotlight interview and clips they might have used on Sunrise. As it turned out it (Australia) became the only market in the world not to have a one-on-one with Adele.”Adding insult to injury Ten, which is owned by CBS which produced the Winfrey interview, has already broadcast a large chunk of the special, said to have run to nine minutes.Doran, seen as a potential successor to David Koch on Sunrise, was back at work on Saturday hosting Saturday Weekend Sunrise alongside co-anchor Monique Wright.Got a news tip?
