A Year 11 student at Menai High School in the Sutherland Shire tested positive for Covid-19 last week, with all Year 11 students sent home for the week leading up to December 6 as a result. An Education Department spokesman confirmed the positive case.“NSW Health have promptly assessed the situation and advised that there is no requirement to cease school operations,” the spokesman said.“The school is operating strict cohorting at the school with only students in Year 11 asked to self-isolate as a precaution while the school completes contact tracing.”The department declined to expand on the student’s condition, including whether the student in question had contracted the Omicron strain or whether there were any other particular risk factors to provoke the students’ isolation. “We can’t identify or make any comment about the individual’s case,” the spokesman said.On December 4, the school posted on Facebook that contact tracing was complete.“We are anticipating a large number of Year 11 students will be absent from school on Monday,” the school wrote.“No new content will be taught in Year 11 lessons on Monday.”Menai High School parents in the comments expressed growing concern about anticipated assessments planned for December 9 and 10 as their children head into their HSC year. Some parents said their children had been invited to return to school after they were confirmed not to be close contacts, while others said children who were in the same roll call as the affected student were ordered to self-isolate.
