The most offensive and inappropriate ads of 2021

Ad Standards received almost 300 complaints for the Crazy Domains commercial which was described by concerned viewers as offensive, unhygienic and illegal. The ad was dropped by the company after the Ad Standards Community Panel found it breached the Australian Association of National Advertisers code of ethics.Burger chain Grill’d’s ad featuring an ominous cartoon clown flashing animated children in an alley and then revealing toys in the lining of his coat, saw 88 complaints filed, making it the third most complained about ad. It was modified after a community panel finding that it breached the code of ethics in relation to violence and sex/nudity.Meanwhile Olympian Kelsey-Lee Barber’s Australian Beef: Feed Your Greatness ad for Meat and Livestock Australian was the year’s 8th most complained about ad, drawing 41 complaints.Viewers slammed the ad which saw Barber battling with her ‘on-screen brother’ over a piece of beef as sexist, misogynistic, belittling and reinforcing unhelpful stereotypes. It was cleared of any code of ethics breaches.Advertisements for a financial services business, an adult toy, a lingerie brand, women’s sanitary products, a broadband company and an insurance company made it into the top 10 list.Ad Standards received over 4,500 complaints in 2021 with more than 300 advertisements assessed by the Community Panel against the advertising industry codes.
