Sutton to face grilling on pandemic powers

The new cross-party parliamentary committee was established as part of the state’s new pandemic specific legislation and is tasked with reviewing pandemic orders.Oversight of pandemic orders was a key concern of legal experts, with early drafts of the legislation slammed for failing to properly allow for independent scrutiny.Members of the new Pandemic Declaration Accountability and Oversight Committee, chaired by independent MP Suzanna Sheed, include a minority of government MPs.Pandemic Declaration Accountability and Oversight CommitteeAs well as recommend changes to orders, the committee has the power to refer any matter to Victorian ombudsman Deborah Glass for investigation.Professor Sutton, who will appear before noon and 2pm, will be accompanied by the Department of Health’s Deputy Secretary Public Health Policy Nicole Brady.“This is an important opportunity for members of our Committee to gain a greater insight into the role of the CHO and discuss the process of declaring pandemic orders,” Ms Sheed said.To watch the live broadcast, click hereThe joint investigatory committee intends to hold further public hearings throughout the year.
