Is it just me, or is spring the best season for new makeup trends? Every year, spring’s arrival comes with dreamy makeup looks that completely transform the way I think about makeup. Maybe it’s because the weather is starting to get a bit warmer and the promise of sunshine after 5 p.m. is on the horizon, but spring makeup always feels hopeful, playful, and fresh.
This year’s trends did not disappoint. After speaking with celebrity makeup artists who gave me the lowdown on spring 2022’s hottest trends, I decided to try my favorites for myself. Even though some of them seemed daunting (two-toned eyeshadow?) I ended up with approachable looks that I hope you try for yourself—they’re much easier than you might think. Keep reading to see my favorite trends and how I executed them at home.
“Two-toned eyeshadow looks (easy and practical), especially seen in matte pastel and glitter, will be trending this spring. What’s best about eye makeup these days is that anything goes. It’s the perfect season to break out that palette and play with shapes, texture, and color.” —Lori Leib, Creative Director Bodyography Professional Cosmetics
“I think the ‘no-makeup’ makeup trend is still strong, if not stronger. With new technology (in both skincare and product development), the products that are out in the market help us achieve the desired look. Who doesn’t want to look fresh and gorgeous, as if they’ve just had an amazing vacation?” —Samantha Lau, Celebrity Makeup Artist
“Matchy-matchy lip and cheek duos take the guesswork out of color matching, and highlighter goes from the cheekbones to all over the cheeks for an angelic glow. What I love most about skin for spring is that it is playful, honest, and just plain pretty.” —Leib
“I see bold colors on lips, and the heavy use of lip liners coming back with a sheer lip tint or lipgloss on top.” —Tai Young-Gardner, Celebrity Makeup Artist and Creator of the 5 Steps to Flawless Vegan Brush Set.
“Instead of overdrawing the lips, glosses and tints are big. For me, by using these sheerest tints of colors, it gives the appearance of bigger lips and it’s a bit more effortless.” —Lau
