Newman, 76, was playing a round with a mate last Thursday (April 14) at The National at Cape Schanck when his playing partner snap hooked ball and sent it cannoning into his ribs.Newman was standing about 40 metres away from his mate, to the side of where he was hitting off.“A fully blown three metal off the deck hit me from about 40m and knocked me down and broke two of my ribs, cracked them,” Newman said.“It happened on the second hole, and I played on and finished the round.”Newman did not realise he had broken ribs, but after the pain continued to escalate he finally took himself to the emergency department at the Epworth Hospital last Saturday.A rueful Newman said he was an idiot to have been standing where he was when the ball hit him, acknowledging he could have sustained far worse injuries. He described the freak ‘snap hook’ as “you go to hit the ball straight up the fairway and it veers left severely, quickly and severely.”“I am just on light duties for the next few weeks,” he said.
