What life in Aus Open quarantine is really like

OSTN Staff

8am-ishWake up. I usually get up a bit earlier but (husband) Justin and I came to this middle ground. I told him I’m not stumbling around in the darkness and the window curtain will be opening promptly upon his queen’s feet — that’s me — touching the carpet.

8.30amWith my matcha tea latte now in hand, I start out with my morning power hour. I use it to start my day with the right intention, purpose and energy. It includes meditation, journaling, reading, looking up inspiring quotes, breathing exercises, gratefulness practise or anything else that energises me. I always shift around what I do as it’s more than just making it a habit — it’s about having a feeling of looking forward to waking up and being inspired! 9.30amCheck out social media, emails, texts and spend time responding to things that need to get done. I’m also learning Italian! 10.30amSnack time and take time to connect with my siblings, friends and family back home. 11.30amCheck in with my team to see what I am doing for my first workout. Justin and I completely change the room around to become the “Sands Sweat Studio” and create a space for our fitness time. My morning workouts start with a bike warm-up. Strength training with my trainers Jay Schroader and Charles Maka from Evo Ultrafit back in Arizona, then we end with an intense but creative ab routine.

1pmAO hard quarantine Zoom meeting (for players and their teams) with Craig Tiley and Steve Simon. My hat’s off to everyone busting their arses to make sure communication is clear, questions are being answered and needs are being met. What a challenging time for everyone but I really have a sense we are all coming together to make this work out the best we can.2pmLunch time and then into a power nap. I love power naps. 3.30pmWorkout No 2. This one includes a FaceTime with my hitting partner Ettore Zito and my osteopath Cary Galeano in the room across the hall. (So close but so far!) They are both from Italy so I get to practise my Italian grammar. Next, I strap on a heart-rate monitor and we go through tennis-specific footwork drills designed for me by Mark Kovacs at Kovacs Institute. Another shoutout to AO for sending up workout equipment to the rooms but also to the Grand Hyatt for being understanding.

5pmCool down and recovery time, which is me basically asking Justin to give me a massage. Thanks, babe. We also take down our “Sands Sweat Studio” so it really feels like a different room again. 6.30pm-ishWe are usually ordering up a really late lunch or early dinner on UberEats. We alternate our seafood/fish days from Hunky Dory with some excellent Greek food from Baharl.

7pmDuring dinner we decide if it’s a movie or series night. Every tournament we pick a “Squad Show” for all of us to watch together and after dinner we pop the popcorn and have a team movie night. Haven’t decided on our official one yet so I’m open to suggestions. 9pmSpa time! Let me tell you something … we are coming out of this with glowing and radiant skin! 11pmJustin is just half way through his day but it’s bedtime for me!
