India on Thursday recorded 314,835 coronavirus cases within 24 hours, the highest daily total anywhere in the world.

Deaths also rose by 2,104, which is the country’s worst daily death toll, according to the BBC.

The country is dealing with a devastating surge of the virus that is overwhelming the health system and leading to a shortage of oxygen with which to treat patients.

India had reported more than 200,000 cases a day for the previous seven days in a row.

The country is now close to having recorded 16 million coronavirus cases.

Reuters reported that the record for the daily new number of cases was previously held by the US, when it recorded 297,430 on one day in January.
