An Afghan interpreter who witnessed a baby girl die in his arms as he tried to save her from the Kabul explosion is now trying to rescue his own daughter.

The interpreter, who identifies himself as Carl for safety reasons, told Fox News he’s stuck in Afghanistan and is trying to get to the airport with his 5-year-old daughter.

Carl was by his car at the time of the Kabul explosion that killed dozens, including at least 13 US service members.

After the explosion went off, he found an infant whom he had tried to take to the hospital. The infant ended up dying in his arms.

“I tried,” he said, according to CBS News. “I did my best to help her.”

But now Carl is trying desperately to return to the site of the explosion – this time to rescue his daughter from the same fate.

“If I get a chance to go back to the airport, yes, I will try,” Carl told Fox News. “It doesn’t matter if I’m going to get blown up. I’m doing all this because I have a 5-year-old daughter that I’m trying to get her out of here so she can have a great future. And I don’t want her to suffer.”

Carl doesn’t believe he will be able to evacuate the Taliban-run country, but he’s willing to try if it means a chance at safety for his daughter.

“I know that I’m going to be left behind. I know that for sure. I know that I’m going to get killed,” Carl said. “But the good thing is that I’m not going to die for a bad thing. I’m going to die for a good thing. What I did, I will never regret it because I have tried to help people.”

Carl has been a translator for the United States for 10 years, Fox News reported.

Since the Taliban imposed power, hundreds of Afghans have been trying to flee the country. The Biden administration is attempting to get thousands of Americans out as well.
