Former President Donald Trump’s PAC released its official Trump Card design on September 2, and the centerpiece of it – a golden eagle with outspread wings – appears to be a free stock image sourced from Shutterstock.
The eagle design is listed as a “high popularity” vector image that is “often used” on the image-sharing site. The image can be downloaded for free if users sign up for a free trial. Shutterstock did not immediately reply to Insider’s request for comment.
The image on Shutterstock is credited to a graphic artist named David Randall Peters. According to his profile on the site, Peters is based in Wellington, New Zealand, where he owns a small creative design outfit called Aeroshop Graphic.
Peters did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment on whether the Trump PAC had contacted or compensated him for using what appears to be his art. The Trump PAC also did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment on whether they have been in touch with or compensated Peters.
Trump is asking his supporters to donate at least $45 to obtain a Trump Card. Being an “Official Trump Cardholder” is a sign that one is part of his “MOST important group of supporters,” per a September 2 email from the former president’s camp.
In an August email, Trump’s PAC sent four prospective Trump Card designs to supporters and asked them to choose their favorite. The card has been criticized for bearing resemblance to symbols from the Third Reich and Nazi Germany iconography. Trump’s PAC has not publicly responded to this criticism.
