Cops turn away mourners from funeral

Radio station 2GB reported “about 100 people” turned up for the funeral service. But police said no rules were breached, and only people who were permitted to attend the service were allowed in. “Officers from Auburn Police Area Command received information regarding a funeral being held at Rookwood Cemetery yesterday,” NSW Police said in a statement.“About 10.30am, officers attended and set up checkpoints with only designated attendees given access.“Others were turned away with no breaches detected.”Only 10 mourners are allowed at funerals in Greater Sydney, according to the NSW government’s lockdown rules. Rookwood Cemetery is located in the hotspot local government area of Cumberland; however, the funeral rules in hot spots are no different from the rest of Sydney.2GB host Ben Fordham said it was “lucky” police stopped people from going in because they would have otherwise been liable for big fines.“They’re lucky the police did get a tip-off and set up the checkpoints, otherwise 100 people would have been in there,” he said.“And there probably would have been 100 people handed massive fines.” On-the-spot fines can be as steep as $1000 for breaching public health orders and up to $3000 for participating in a rule-breaking gathering.
