NSW, Vic record 74k Covid cases as state suffers deadliest day

The state has surpassed its previous record of 15 deaths set on September 29 and October 1 last year during the Delta outbreak.Seven-hundred-and-twenty-seven people have now died in NSW with Covid since the pandemic began.NSW recorded 30,062 new cases during the latest reporting period in the 24 hours to 8pm on Saturday.It comes as Victoria recorded 44,155 new Covid-19 cases and four more deaths on Sunday.In NSW, there are 1927 people in hospital with the virus, with 151 of those in intensive care, up from 1795 and 145 patients respectively on Saturday.Of the over 16 population, 93.7 per cent are double-dose vaccinated while 95.1 per cent have had at least one shot.There were 98,986 PCR tests processed in the 24 hours to 8pm on Saturday.Authorities have said residents will be able to log positive rapid antigen test results online through Service NSW from later this week.NSW hospitals remain under significant pressure with high numbers of hospitalisations and the loss of many medical staff to Covid-19 isolation requirements.Government officials have said cases are expected to climb higher over the coming weeks and peak in the third or fourth week before a decline in February, according to their modelling.In Victoria, the health department, which has started tallying rapid antigen tests, said 22,051 of the new cases were detected on RATs and 22,104 were PCR test results.There were 83,993 PCR tests processed on Saturday.There are 752 people in hospital with the virus, with 104 of those in intensive care and 23 patients on ventilators.NED-5151-Covid-19-booster-shots-graphicIt comes after the state recorded a mammoth 51,356 new cases and nine Covid deaths on Saturday after a week’s worth of rapid antigen tests were included in the daily figures.“We don’t want Victorians to think that the daily transmission has doubled overnight,” Health Minister Martin Foley said.“The reported figure has certainly significantly spiked based on that week’s worth of unreported figures that we now have captured in the system.“However, we should not rule out that there are still undiagnosed cases out there in the wider community, particularly as access to rapid antigen tests grows each day as more supply that gradually comes online.”It comes as thousands of people in Melbourne were sent a text message saying that their Covid PCR test samples were “invalid”.
