‘What We Do in the Shadows’ (2019-)

Stream “What We Do in the Shadows” on Hulu

“What We Do in the Shadows” is based on the 2014 movie of the same name, which is co-directed by and stars Taika Waititi. Waititi returns as an executive producer and occasional guest start on the series.

Like the movie, the show features a mockumentary style. The story follows the comedic adventures of four vampires — played by Kayvan Novak, Matt Berry, Natasia Demetriou, and Mark Proksch — who share a house in Staten Island with their familiar (Harvey Guillén).

The humor in “What We Do in the Shadows” is similar in tone to “Our Flag Means Death.” While Stede never fully adapts to life on the high seas and creates a ship that reflects that, the vampires in this show never quite adapt to modern life, which leads to hilarious fish-out-of-water situations.

‘Black Sails’ (2014-2017)

Though not a comedy, “Black Sails” is a perfect fit for viewers who want more pirate action. Like “Our Flag Means Death,” the show fictionalizes the lives of real pirates during the Golden Age of Piracy.

The show is considered a prequel to the Robert Louis Stevenson novel “Treasure Island,” and while it’s more brutal and dramatic than “Our Flag Means Death,” the series also features a central relationship between two men. Both shows also include appearances by characters inspired by the same historical figures, including Calico Jack, Blackbeard, and Israel Hands.

‘Portlandia’ (2011-2018)

Stream “Portlandia” on AMC Plus

Fred Armisen, who recurs on “Our Flag Means Death” as Geraldo, one of Spanish Jackie’s 19 husbands, is the co-creator and co-star of “Portlandia.” The sketch comedy show, which ran for eight seasons, spoofs the city of Portland’s reputation for being a haven to hipsters.

Armisen and co-creator Carrie Brownstein play a rotating set of recurring pairs who mingle with the quirky people of Portland.

‘The Great’ (2020-)

"The Great"
Elle Fanning in “The Great.”

Stream “The Great” on Hulu

“The Great” is referred to as “an occasionally true story” in season one and “an almost entirely untrue story” in season two. The show, which loosely charts Catherine the Great’s rise to power in 18th Century Russia, adapts history in a similar way to “Our Flag Means Death.”

While Catherine the Great (Elle Fanning) and Emperor Peter III (Nicholas Hoult) were real people, the approach to storytelling on “The Great” doesn’t aim for accuracy. Instead, the plot is nearly all fiction. The wickedly funny historical revisionism on “The Great” will appeal to fans of “Our Flag Means Death.”

Two seasons are now available to stream on Hulu and a third season is in the works.

‘Los Espookys’ (2019-)

Stream “Los Espookys” on HBO Max

Another show co-created by and starring Fred Armisen, “Los Espookys” follows a group of horror-obsessed friends. Living in a country where strange happenings are a part of life, they take their love of everything horror and gore and start a business to provide haunts to people who need it.

Fans of “Our Flag Means Death” will love the group dynamics of the show, where each character has their specific role to fill, but it never feels too cliché.

‘Veep’ (2012-2019)

Stream “Veep” on HBO Max

HBO’s award-winning political satire follows the life and career of the fictional Vice President Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). The show has a really strong ensemble and, similar to “Our Flag Means Death,” they all react differently to incompetent leadership.

A lot of the show’s comedy comes from these reactions — some members of the staff overcompensate, while others double down on incompetence. And while Vice President Meyer’s team never openly plans a mutiny the way Stede’s crew does, you always know they’re thinking about it.

‘Flight of the Conchords’ (2007-2009)

flight of the conchords
Jemaine Clement, Bret McKenzie, and Rhys Darby in “Flight of the Conchords.”

Stream “Flight of the Conchords” on HBO Max

“Flight of the Conchords” is one of the first projects that Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby worked on together. The series follows the adventures of a New Zealand folk music duo (played by real-life musical comedy duo Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie) as they try to make it in New York City.

Darby plays a lead role in the show as the duo’s well-intentioned manager and Waititi directed four episodes. Kristen Schaal, who has a memorable guest appearance on “Our Flag Means Death,” is also a main cast member. The show has a quirky sense of humor and is filled with memorable comedy songs.

‘Ghosts’ (2021-)

Stream “Ghosts” on Paramount Plus

After a freak accident in her new home, Samantha (Rose McIver) wakes up from a coma to find that she can now see and interact with ghosts. As Sam adjusts to her new reality, she gets to know all of the ghosts trapped in her house and even helps them find closure with the living.

Like “Our Flag Means Death,” “Ghosts” features a well-written, three-dimensional gay character in the form of Captain Isaac Higgintoot — a ghost who died in the Revolutionary War.

“Ghosts” is a new American sitcom that airs on CBS and streams on Paramount Plus, but it’s adapted from an equally great British show. You can stream the BBC version on HBO Max.

‘Reservation Dogs’ (2021-)

Taika Waititi co-created “Reservation Dogs” with filmmaker Sterlin Harjo. The dramedy is about teenagers living on a reservation in rural Oklahoma as they try to scrape up enough cash to move to California.

The show is notable for having an all-Indigenous writing and directing team, plus a cast and crew made up of almost entirely Indigenous North Americans. The first season is now available to stream and a second is in development.

‘Dickinson’ (2019-2021)

Dickinson Emily Death
Hailee Steinfeld and Wiz Khalifa in “Dickinson.”

Stream “Dickinson” on Apple TV Plus

Like “Our Flag Means Death,” “Dickinson” uses historically accurate settings and costumes but blends them with modern stylistic elements and humor. Focused on the life of Emily Dickinson, the comedy series stars Hailee Steinfeld as the title character.

Where “Our Flag Means Death” uses Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain” as the soundtrack for a pivotal scene toward the end of the series, “Dickinson” also makes great use of modern music, most notably with songs by Mitski, Taylor Swift, and Billie Eilish.

Though the romantic plotline in “Our Flag Means Death” is fictional, the relationships in “Dickinson” are more closely linked to the poet’s real life. All three seasons are now available to stream on Apple TV Plus.
