Smash Mouth lead singer Steve Harwell is reportedly in hospice care, with only days to live.
A manager for the 56-year-old singer has told celebrity website TMZ that Harwell is receiving care at home for the final stages of liver cancer.
He was recently released from hospital, and friends and family have since gathered at his bedside. The manager said Harwell likely only had days to live.
“He is surrounded by family and friends,” the manager said in a statement.
“My only additional comment is that we would hope that people would respect Steve and his family’s privacy during this difficult time.”
Smash Mouth is best known for some of the biggest pop culture hits of the early 2000s, including Shrek anthems All Star and I’m a Believer.
Harwell co-founded the band in 1994. But he left it in 2021 after a controversial performance in New York where he abused the audience, flipped it off, slurred his words, and even – according to one report – gave a Nazi salute to the crowd.
He announced his retirement just days later, due to ongoing health issues
“Despite Steve’s best efforts to work through these ailments, he is heartbroken to share that it has become impossible for him to continue doing what he loves most, performing in front of the band’s millions of fans around the world,” a band spokesperson told the Los Angeles Times.
TMZ reported at the time that Harwell had been diagnosed with cardiomyopathy eight years earlier and Wernicke’s encephalopathy (an acute neurological condition).
His years of alcohol abuse was also reported at the time. It was said to have contributed to Harwell’s health woes.
The band is yet to make any public comment on Harwell’s condition.
