Health authorities on Saturday morning said Duran Raman, 36, was now in a “stable but serious condition” in Gold Coast University hospital after he had shown signs of deterioration from a Covid infection. Queensland has again dodged any new cases of the virus – both in the community and hotel quarantine.It means there have been no cases have yet been linked to Mr Raman, or the infected truck driver went through the state’s southeast last week. The unvaccinated Mr Raman – whose entry back into Queensland two weeks ago is being investigated by police – has been too sick to speak since he was admitted to hospital on Wednesday. He had shown signs of deteriorating on Friday but has so far avoided being admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. “They’re keeping a very close eye on him – he’s on high-flow oxygen and he’ll probably need to go into intensive care,” chief health officer Dr Jeannette Young told reporters on Friday.“That is terrible. He is a very young, fit man who was not vaccinated and he’s now extremely sick.”The state government said Mr Raman was believed to have left Queensland in September, and spent some time in Melbourne.He arrived back on the Gold Coast – where he lives alone in an apartment at the Island Beach Resort – around October 10, and may have even been infectious for a couple of days before then.Mr Raman was an Uber driver, but the company confirmed he had not driven with them since September 19.He has been living at Broadbeach for about a year and played Aussie rules football on the Gold Coast earlier in 2021.The infectious truck driver flagged by government on Friday stopped at a petrol station at Acacia Ridge and a cinema complex at Stafford earlier in the week before moving on to Melbourne, where he tested positive. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has urged residents of the region to get the jab and boost Queensland’s flagging vaccination numbers before the state opens its borders on December 17.
